I think AR and VR (Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality) is the technology you should get intoFrom decades, we are trying to make human interaction with machines better, more realistic and AR and VR is how you take it to the next level. So, skills like 3D tools, sound design, VR UI etc., should be a must-posses skill.

hm...but how can we quantify AR and VR as skills?
They are output IMO!
Ya right.. I meant the skills required to be a VR developer.. Have edited my answer now :-P *peace*
haha okay @digger :)
I think VR used with AI can build something mind-blowing.

Blockchain

is the solution for data transferring with high security and integrity. With so many applications of Blockchain already existing in various fields and so many fields in which Blockchain can be used, Blockchain will change the face of data storage and transfer as we know it.

I was actually thinking of learning blockchain; by any chance do you have an idea about certified courses in this technology?
Hm....Agreed. But will it be the catalyst to technological growth?
There are many online certification courses available like udemy, Coursera, Edureka.. But I would personally prefer the certification course of Edureka. The 24*7 tech support is really useful.
Thank you so very much @Sunil :)

I think the best new technology to learn would be AI. We are using AI in literally everything right now. AI is a hot technology and is likely to stay hot for a really long time, its only going to get better with time. Hence learning AI would be very useful.

I really think that AI is one of the top tech that is trending. But inorder to have knowledge on AI you will have to get hands on with many other technologies.
Yesss thats true!! Once we have the knowledge, we can start practicing from small projects to big ones. And eventually become a pro at it. I think AI has a lot of potential for atleast a decade, mastering it would be very useful.

I think Neural network will be in demand in the coming future.
Neural networks, also known as Deep Learning, are pushing computing power into a new frontier.

Driving autonomously through busy streets or recognizing human emotions through facial expressions is possible as a result of a new type of computer simulation based on the structure of the human brain. Artificial neural networks simulate neuron-like connections and mimic how the human brain processes, stores, and acts on information.

The power of neural networks can be leveraged for just about every industry – from online retail (shopping cart analysis) and finance (credit card fraud prevention) to sports (winning games), healthcare (disease prevention), and agriculture (managing crops).

AI techniques are evolving rapidly and organizations will need to invest significantly in skills, processes and tools to successfully exploit these techniques and build AI-enhanced systems," said Mr. Cearley. "Investment areas can include data preparation, integration, algorithm and training methodology selection, and model creation. I think the top trending tech would be Blockchain Ethereum.

Ethereum is an open software platform based on blockchain technology. Blockchains are a ledger of transactions that are recorded as “blocks,” time-stamped, and unalterable. Blockchains are designed so that data cannot be altered retroactively, making it more resistant to fraud or tampering. Ethereum blockchains are used by developers to build and deploy decentralized applications that are not controlled by any individual or central entity.

I think Hyperledger has more scope when compared to Ethereum.
@Johnyboy can you elaborate the point?
Hey @Priyaj Kumar, I have got a blog for you that explains what ethereum and hyperledger is. I hope you find it useful. https://bit.ly/2KuiCUc
That's a nice content, thank you.

It could help me more if you justify your ranking.. :)
Are VR and AR different skill sets?
@chaitanya_narala: Yes. AR refers to Augmented Reality which essentially deals with virtual items overlayed on the real world. VR, on the other hand, refers to Virtual Reality where a complete virtual world exists. The way these two technologies work and the engines they require to run make them separate skillsets.

One technology that most people seem to overlook today is Big Data. Professionals nowadays have the mindset that the "trend" lifespan of Big Data is coming to an end because of the saturation of skill in the industry. But, that couldn't be far from the truth. Take, for instance, the concept of exascale computing. Imagine a computing engine which can execute 1 exaFLOP, quite literally 1 billion billion, number of calculations per second. It is believed that this is the computing power of the human brain at the neural level.

These kinds of technological concepts still exist and are being tried and tested, as we speak. So, yeah, big data still has a very bright future ahead.

But, do you think it will still make it to today's top 10?
IMO, Nope!
@Vardhan Big Data Technology is a need. And needs when fulfilled, create a trend. So, yes, I think Big Data will make to to top 10.
@Vardhan: The big data and analytics we are seeing in the industry today is just the tip of the iceberg. If we delve in, big data has applications in almost every single domain in the IT field ranging from IoT and AI to data science and RPA. So, it is imminent for big data to create a whole new trend in the coming years. Let's wait and see.
Agreed @Cache007.
But when we focus on what's trending in 2018, will Big Data make it through?
Maybe even 5 years back, Big Data was trending and could've captured #1. Just not anymore. :(
#WelcomeTo2018
hmm. interesting...
@Vardhan: Yes, big data and analytics is still a trending profile in 2018. For instance, there are over 20,734 for profiles related big data posted on Indeed.com, alone, which is far more than most other technologies. Another important factor you can consider is that big data is one of the few domains that any professional ranging from a fresher to an experienced product manager can get into.

2018 is huge for big data because of technologies like AI and IoT coming to the forefront. Without big data and analytics, it would've been impossible to tap into these new domains. So, even though the outer shell might seem like a new technology, big data is still their foundation, and companies need professionals who can understand and work with big data to implement projects in AI and IoT.
I can't disagree there...

Machine learning is already the big thing. But can you talk more about the implementation.
Mention the skills to possess

This world itself is an amalgamation of several data. Every second of our life we are generating some data or the other ,but what matters is efficient handling of these data for better performance. So for me, Big data and hadoop is something which is  the need of the hour. It can definitely boost our career   .A better knowledge of these technologies can play a vital role in helping our pay check take a leap.

Intelligent things are physical things that go beyond the execution of rigid programming models to exploit AI to deliver advanced behaviors and interact more naturally with their surroundings and with people. AI is driving advances for new intelligent things such as autonomous vehicles, robots, drones etc. and delivering enhanced capability to many existing things such as Internet of Things(IOT), connected consumer and industrial systems.

I think learning DevOps would be very very beneficial as all the companies now are shifting to the DevOps culture. knowing at least the basic of a few widely used tools would increase your chance to impress the interviewer.

DevOps Tools:

  • Git
  • Jenkins
  • Docker
  • Kubernetes
  • Ansible
  • Puppet
  • Chef

Hey @Vardhan, talking about multi-purpose skills that'll come handy in future would be DevOps. Learning DevOps tools would be very useful as those tools are mainly for continuous integration and automation which is much needed in the IT industry.
