Why is conditional formatting not applying to all rows columns in a Power BI table or matrix visual

Why is conditional formatting not applying to all rows/columns in a Power BI table or matrix visual?

I’ve set up conditional formatting in my Power BI table or matrix visual, but it’s not consistently applying to all rows or columns as expected. What might be causing this selective application, and how can I troubleshoot to achieve uniform formatting?

  • If you notice that in Power BI, the conditional formatting is not behaving the same way across either rows or columns, a few aspects might lead to this. One is the conditional formatting rules you have set – especially with respect to various data types or fields or aggregations in the visual. Attachments like in Power BI, conditional formatting will mostly be applicable to certain fields that are within certain conditions, for instance, the numeric values for color scales. Therefore, if a rule is made for a particular type of data, it may not apply to any row or column that does not have such data.
  • Another reason could be that your conditional formatting rule refers to values in other fields that are not the ones displayed. For instance, if one such rule is dependent on a field within the data model but outside the visible report, Power BI may err and not apply the rule to every row and column. To avoid issues with formatting not being applied equally, make sure the visual's formatting is correct for any fields used to base the conditional formatting.
  • Lastly, there can be other advantages if the condition field is a calculated field or a measure. Still, such uses have to be exercised with caution, particularly where complex measure logics exist that produce blank and null columns. Conditional formatting in Power BI ignores blanks and nulls. Therefore, it is important to check your measure calculations and avoid irregularities in the value data to achieve the desired consistent appearance.

The most probable reasons for conditional formatting failing to show properly in Power BI might be conflicting data types, absent values, or incompatible conditional rules. Use a steady column or measure for the conditional formatting so rule logic can be examined for holes. Make certain that all data corresponds with what is expected of the formatting criteria while also ensuring that the rule encompasses all rows/columns.
