Trend analysis identifies early warning indications of delays before they become critical. Here's how you utilize it:

  • Monitor Progress Over Time - Instead of focusing solely on individual snapshots, track task completion trends across various reporting periods.

  • Analyze the Schedule Performance Index (SPI) - A decreasing SPI trend suggests an increase in delays. If SPI regularly < 1, action is required.

  • Compare Planned and Actual Completion Rates - Look for patterns of tasks taking longer than intended.

  • Use Earned Schedule (ES) Metrics - ES trends provide more specific information about schedule performance in time units.

  • Identify Recurring Bottlenecks - If delays occur frequently in the same task areas, the underlying causes must be addressed.

By regularly assessing patterns, you may change plans before they spiral out of control.
