How to manage file size and multiple numeric what-if parameters?

I’m working on managing file sizes in Power BI while incorporating multiple numeric what-if parameters for dynamic analysis. As the number of parameters and the complexity of models increase, the file size tends to grow, which can slow down performance. I’m looking for guidance on efficient ways to handle larger files and maintain performance, particularly when dealing with multiple numeric what-if parameters. Are there best practices for managing file size and ensuring smooth functionality while incorporating numerous parameters? Any tips or tools for optimizing this process would be helpful!

In Power BI, controlling numerous what-if parameters and file size poses both technical and functional challenges. The more parameters you add, the bigger the file is and the longer it takes to perform even simple operations, which can cause complications and slowness. To avoid this:

Restrict the Number of Parameters: Rather than adding a large number of parameters, consider limiting their number by combining them into values that are fewer but richer in meaning. This will help ensure that the report is not heavy and does not take much time to load.

Replace Parameters with Measures and Filters: Whenever possible, it is better to provide some practical measures or filters instead of some parameters. Measures do not help increase the volume of the file as they are concerned with data computation only. However, filters help reduce the data sets, which in turn improves the efficiency of the calculations.

Slicers as Substitutes: Instead of a number of parameters, use slicers, which will make the report more user-friendly without having to worry about loading large, pre-calculated what-if analysis scenarios. Filter slicers are less demanding on performance than many parameters set to numbers.

Concentrating on these aspects helps to keep the file size in check but allows for the incorporation of the what-if analysis without affecting the effectiveness of your Power BI reports.

Manage file size and performance with multiple what-if numerical parameters in Power BI:·

Optimize the Data Model: downgrading granularity, removing unnecessary columns, and utilizing aggregations where possible.

Efficient Parameter Usage: limiting the range and increment of the what-if parameters reduces the total size of the generated dataset.

Optimize Storage: Use VertiPaq Analyzer to identify and fix columns that consume too much memory; convert them to smaller data types or encoding techniques.

These steps create dynamic analysis in a file that is manageable in size and does not affect its smooth performance.
