How do I transpose a column to a matrix in Excel

I use a MacBook to work with Excel, and I have no idea how to convert, for instance, a column of 9 elements to a 3x3 matrix. The first column of the matrix will have the first element repeated three times, and so on, therefore my attempt at using the TRANSPOSE function did not produce the desired results.

With data in column A, pick some cells and enter:

=INDEX($A:$A,COLUMNS($A:A)+3*(ROWS($1:1)-1),0)

Then copy both across and down.
