Hive external table without URI scheme

Hi. I am new to Hive and I am learning from a tutorial. In that, they had mentioned the URI scheme to create an external table. Is it possible to create an external table without using an URI scheme?

Yes, it is possible to create an external table without a URI scheme. Refer to the below code to see how to do that. 

GRANT ALL ON URI 'hdfs://namenode:XXX/path/to/table' TO ROLE <role name>;
CREATE EXTERNAL TABLE foo LOCATION 'namenode:XXX/path/to/table' TO ROLE <role name>;
