Does system admin experience counted for software testing jobs

+1 vote
I'm  working in NTT Data as a system administration senior associate. I'm planning to move to software testing career inorder to avoid shifts(I'm working in shift based jobs ). I would like to know whether my experience is counted or not. As of now I have 8 months experience in IT. I 'm planning to stay few more months till I got 1yr experience. Please suggest and let me know which testing tool is trending now and have good career growth...does programming language is mandatory to learn testing??

In this case, your experience will get counted which might help you in fetching a job in the testing domain, but since you are a newbie you will need to put that extra effort to be at par with experienced testers. Selenium is definitely one technology that you should be well versed with. Having programming knowledge would be a plus!

If you are referring to the pay that your experience could fetch, it's subject to the employers!

Good Luck!

I think System Admin experience will be considered for testing (not sure about this). If you have been working as a System Admin, you have good configuring and troubleshooting skills. With troubleshooting skills comes the skill of looking at the right place for the right thing which I think will be helpful software testing. Why don't you try working as a System Admin, Linux Admin or Database admin? I think your experience will be more relevant to those roles.

Programming is not mandatory for testing but having programming knowledge will be an advantage. To know about the top software testing tools, visit this link

@Omkar, he wants to avoid shift based jobs. DB/Sys/Linux admins are all shift based jobs because administrating anything is a round-the-clock effort and needs constant supervision.

Your experience as a professional will get counted for sure. But you'll still be treated as a fresher in the testing domain. But that should not stop you from switching domains. Better late than never.

Speaking of popular tools, I feel Selenium is the best from the lot that is available. I'm not the best person to answer this question, so do consult others also for their advise.
