When should I switch company

I have been working in a company now for 1+ year. I get my hike recently and so was thinking of switching the company because I might get a high salary if I switch. Is it a good thing if I switch now? How much time should I wait before switching company?

The ideal time to switch a company is between 2-3 years. Switching a company often and in less time working there would affect your credibility. If you have just been for a year, your priority should be knowledge over money. For the first few years, you concentrate more on how you can gain more knowledge and skills. If you gain good skills and knowledge in the beginning period, you will surely get good salary later. Talking about your particular scenario. If you want to switch the company only because of the salary, then what matters is how much more salary will you get if you switch? Though I don't suggest you switch just because of salary, if you want to switch, switch if you are getting a minimum of 50% hike. But if you think that along with higher salary you have good opportunities to improve your knowledge, then you can switch.

Money is not the only thing that matters. I suggest you stay in this company for one more year. In 1+ years, you might not have got experience good enough to get you a great hike. Stay in this company, wait for at least 2 years to be completed before you switch the job. With 2 years of experience in a company, you will get good experience, skills and good hike also when you switch.
