What does a Cryptologist do

As much as I know, Cryptologists create encryption and decryption mechanism. What else do they do?

• Evaluate, analyze and target weaknesses in cryptographic security systems and algorithms
• Develop statistical and mathematical models to analyze data and solve security problems
• Investigate, research and test new cryptology theories and applications
• Deal with secure encryption of financial data (e.g. credit card, inter-bank, ATM, online transactions, etc.)
• Avoid illegal access to message transmission data (e.g. wireless network, secure telephone, cellphones, email, etc.) 
• If in the defense field, decoding cryptic messages and coding systems for military, political and/or law enforcement agencies

Along with the tasks in the previous answers, they are also responsible to decode cryptic messages and encode messages. It is not necessary that cryptologists work only for IT company. The main use of cryptologists is in the military.

A cryptologist encodes and decodes digital and lingual data to make the data more secure. He/she uses different methods of cryptology for this.

I read about a UK Cryptologist, Dr, Layla Benmusa.  She  stated it's  about, using mathematics, to secure data and solve cyber security problems.

The basics, is securing, data , from unauthorized access or use.  For example, you could work within a Bank, securing the web traffic , or work within a cyber security firm, protecting client data.
