Is it possible to start your data model in Microsoft Fabric but continue development in Power BI Desktop?

I’ve begun building a data model in Microsoft Fabric, but I want to switch to Power BI Desktop for further development, refinement, or visualization. I’m looking for guidance on whether this workflow is supported and how to move or link the model between the two environments.

Yes, it is possible to start your data model in Microsoft Fabric and continue development in Power BI Desktop, but with specific conditions.

Supported Workflow

If your model is created as a semantic model (previously called a dataset) in Fabric:

  • You can connect to it from Power BI Desktop using DirectLake or Live Connection.

  • Go to Home > Get Data > Power BI Datasets and select your model.

 Limitations

  • You can’t download the .pbix file directly from Fabric.

  • You can’t modify the model structure (e.g., tables or DAX) directly in Power BI Desktop unless you build the model in Desktop first and publish it to Fabric.

 Recommended Approach

  1. Develop initial model in Power BI Desktop (offline).

  2. Publish to Fabric when ready.

  3. Use Live Connection for reports and dashboards from the Desktop.
