Slice notation in Python for string reversal

I saw this line in a program and it is apparently reverses a string. How does it work?

str1[::-1]

The slice notation is [start:end:step]. Step = -1 implies that the string is reversed in steps of 1. Since no values are given for the start and end parameters, python assumes that the string is to be traversed from beginning to end.
