Excel data validation list

Is it feasible to assign a formula to an Excel data validation list? For instance, the "Sum" option from the drop-down list should be able to link the cells' sum formula.

We can use nested if - if the validation list is short.

Example:

=if(validation_List="Sum",sum(A1:A2),if(validation_List="average",average(A1:A2)))
