Reversing Text to Columns in Excel Calc

Question

The majority of spreadsheet programs I've used have a text-to-columns function that divides a single column into several columns based on a variety of factors (delimiter, character count, etc.). This is what I want to accomplish backward.

I am aware that I can use a formula to combine the values of the two cells and insert a delimiter between them to produce the third column, but this seems awkward.

Why isn't this a built-in feature? Or is it hidden from view somewhere?

There are built-in functions that will allow you to combine multiple cells into one with a delimiter between each.

Let's say you want to join cells A1 to A5 with a, in between each value.
