Use or LIKE to compare strings in SQL

Question

There is a (nearly religious) debate over whether LIKE or "=" should be used for comparing strings in SQL statements.

• Does LIKE have a purpose?
• Does the word "=" have a purpose?
• Performance? Readability?

Any help would be appreciated.
