SQL to find the number of distinct values in a column

In a column, I can choose each of the following different values:

• SELECT DISTINCT column_name FROM table_name;

• SELECT column_name FROM table_name GROUP BY column_name;

But how can I obtain the query's row count? Do I need to use a subquery?
