How to display HTML tags as plain text

On my website, I have an input form where HTML is permitted, and I'm attempting to include guidelines for using HTML tags. I want the writing to

<strong>Look just like this line - so then know how to type it</strong>

But all I have thus far is:

Look exactly like this line, and then learn to type it.

How can I display the tags so that users can enter them in?
