How to add and remove classes in Javascript without jQuery

I'm looking for a fast and secure way to add and remove classes from an html element without jQuery.
It also should be working in early IE (IE8 and up).

To add or remove a class on click in jquery:

1. Set the onClick prop on the element.
2. Access the DOM element as event. currentTarget .
3. Use the classList. add() or classList. remove() methods.
