If i don t subscribe for AWS Cloudfront service which AWS service has the smarts to Route my request to closest edge location

I do understand that Route 53 (DNS Service) resolves a domain name to an IP Address but does the DNS Server implicitly have the smarts to connect me to the nearest edge location. How does this happen behind the scenes ? because a user could be anywhere around the world trying to reach a web site hosted in AWS web server but there has to be some kind of intelligence to link my request to the closest edge location. Could it be my local ISP who resolves my connection to the nearest edge location ?

I am a bit confused here. if someone can offer their insights. Thanks
