What does the units in an instance launching mean

While launching an instance it asks for Core unit, CPU unit and memory with options like m1.small, t1.micro etc. Does they mean the CPU of the system?

Ec2 provides the users with instances of different CPU capacity and in order to compare between two CPU capacities, an EC2 compute unit is defined.EC2 Compute units specify the number of CPU units allocated to a particular instance.

Amazon uses a variety of measures to provide each instance with a predictable and consistent amount of memory.
